Resident Hawk

I love to see the hawk, yet I hate to see the hawk.
This Cooper's seems to be ever present,
making it difficult for the yard birds to visit the feeders.

In the front yard

In the backyard

It's been a very mild winter here, with just one snowfall in November. I would have thought the hawk could do it's hunting in the forest a couple of blocks away!

  5. I know how you feel, the hawks are awesome to see. Just not eating my feeder birds. Great shots! Have a happy day!

  6. Great shots, Karen. I think that you should simply enjoy this magnificent accipiter and recognize that you can't expect him to ignore the smorgasbord you have provided for him.

  8. They are handsome birds but, I agree, very scary for birds at feeders!

  9. It's a beautiful bird...though dangerous to smaller birds! Great shots!

When we see a hawk around our place either we or our dog Ginger goes out to make sure it doesn't eat any of our chickens.

  14. We just started having a hawk that has been scouring the farm this month. I do like seeing them in the woods but NOT in the yard , for the chickens sake :)
You got gorgeous shots of your hawk though .

  15. Understand your feelings - I feel the same. I especially get nervous when any hawk is eyeing by free ranging chickens. Great shots of an admirable hunter. I love the last photo with its glaring eyes! Have a good week!

  16. He's really a handsome specimen, but I can see why the little birds would be frightened!

  20. Great photos of a magnificent bird but it does seem unfair that it should take advantage of the little birds at the feeders.

  21. I suppose the food might be easier to get from your garden than in the forest. Great shots of the Hawk.

  29. Hrm. Hawk. Still made at the one that killed our bluebird this past summer.

I like the little songbirds and hawks keep them away, ugh.

    They're majestic but HUNGRY! : - (

Happy New Year, sweet lady! Hugs.

  34. Truly brilliant pictures Karen. Yes, you must have mixed feelings about your feeders. Raptors are such opportunists and where there is a concentration of food (small birds)they will take full advantage. Try and site the feeders in cover so that the hawk can't get its talons in too easily and is slowed down.

  35. he sure seem to be the master of things :) Beautiful shots :)

  36. Gorgeous shots of this opportunistic raptor.

  39. Oh, I know. The songbirds are making themselves scarce at my place, too. I'm guessing it's because of a hawk, an owl, or a fox. Come to think of it, I haven't seen many rabbits lately, either--and I'm OK with that. Beautiful photos of the hawk!

  40. I prefer to see them out in the woods and not at my feeders. You certainly got some awesome shots of him! Wow.

  42. Gorgeous photos! I feel the same way about the hawks who visit our yard--glorious moments, yet terror for the songbirds!

  43. Yes I know exactly what you mean. In our Oregon yard (way back when we had a 'real' house) we had a Kestrel Hawk which I felt just the same about.

    Magnificent raptors, but ....
