Indian Pipe - Macro Monday/ABC Wednesday (I)

While on vacation at the cottage, I spent a lot of time (too much time), photographing various mushrooms and fungi. I thought this little gem was some king of fungus, but I was wrong.

It's a herbaceous perennial plant (Monotropa uniflora), in the Ericaceae family,
AKA - Indian Pipe, Ice Plant, Fairy Smoke, Ghost Flower, Corpse Plant, Ghost Pipe, Dutchman's Pipe, Eyebright, Convulsion Weed, and Fit Root.

This is one of about 3000 species of non-photosynthetic (i.e. heterotrophic) flowering plants. It's white and doesn't have any chlorophyll. Instead of generating energy from sunlight, it is parasitic. Its hosts are certain fungi that are mycorrhizal with trees, meaning it ultimately gets its energy from photosynthetic trees. (Thanks for that info Wikipedia).
It can grow in very dark environments as on the floor of dense forests, which is exactly where I found it!

Going Buggy - Macro/Mellow Yellow Monday/Ruby Tuesday

Click on the pic to enlarge...take a look at the bugs!

My neighbour's vine trails over the fence. It has beautiful blossoms. I noticed today that the usual abundant blooms are sparse, and many have turned brown, although it has just started flowering. Going in for a closer look, I found out why...it's infested with aphids,  visible upon closer inspection. Ewwwwwwwwww....

Flowers Of Hope - Carnations

Macro Monday, Mellow Yellow Monday, Today's Flowers, My World Tuesday

May is Multiple Sclerosis Awareness month in Canada. Every year the MS Carnation Campaign takes place in May to help raise funds and increase awareness. Carnations are sold on street corners, malls and other public spaces. The carnation is Canada's oldest and most recognized symbol of hope in the quest to end multiple sclerosis.

World wide, Multiple Sclerosis (MS) affects about 2.5 million people. Canadians have one of the highest rates of MS in the world. I am one of those Canadians. MS lasts a lifetime. There is no cure.

Over $45 million has been raised through the MS Carnation Campaign since its inception. Funds raised support MS research and services. $45 million worth of flowers is equal to 9 million bouquets of flowers or 27 million individual stems.

Flowers in Winter - Macro and Mellow Yellow Monday

Winter in my part of Canada lasts a long time. We are buried in snow, and this part of the world seems devoid of vivid colour. I so enjoy looking at the flower photos from other parts of the world, as I peruse various photo blogs. I said to my husband last week, I can't wait until winter is over so I can photograph some flowers! Being the sweet man that he is, he brought home a bouquet of my favorite flowers to cheer me up, and give me an opportunity to take some pics.
