Ralph

The resident Great Blue Heron (Ralph), at the cottage.

Morning and evening, Ralph came to fish at the rapids in front of the cottage. A patient bird, waiting for hours to catch a bite. I enjoyed watching him for hours as well.

Summer's End

Wow, that was fast summer!

It's officially over for us as we arrive home from Crowe River.

Tranquil, serene and very scenic on this little piece of paradise.

Beep mastered the paddle board, and spent a lot of time on and in the river.

Cottage Birding

The cottage on Georgian Bay is in the middle of a nature reserve. That means it's well wooded.  It's not an easy place to get bird shots!

Bird feeders can't go up until the winter, as the black bears in the area love to snack on bird seed, and load up on calories in late summer for their big sleep! As much as I would love to get a photo of a bruin, I wouldn't want one on the front porch!

So, this is all I got.

Leaping Leopard

We are back from the cottage. A wonderful time was had by all!

I have 1,853 photos to go through... YIKES! Hubbers lost the bet, he said I must have taken over 2,000! Since I'm still in vacation mode, it's going to take a while to get those pics sorted.

Today, I am sharing one of the many frog pics I took. He just happened to be the first subject on the random memory card I pulled from the pile.

Northern Leopard Frog

The Northern Leopard Frog is an extraordinary leaper! In a single bound, it can cover 1.8 metres. This is 15 times the length of its body, which is between approximately 50 and 110 millimetres.

Georgian Bay

It's vacation time for us!

We are off to the cottage on beautiful Georgian Bay.

This year, Beep, (our granddaughter) will be spending a whole week with us!
Her first vacay without mom and dad!

Because of the cliffs surrounding the cottage, we have sporadic internet access,
so... see you in September when we get back!

Looking Back

It's nothing but dull grey skies around here these days.
So I'm digging into the archives.

I am currently on a much needed vacation on the shores of Georgian Bay. I won't be around to comment on your blogs for a while longer, but I just wanted to share a tiny part of the glorious scenery that now fills my days.

I hope to back to this blog in October!

Cottage Sunset Series #4

Click the pic to enlarge

On our recent vacation at the lake, I sat on the elevated deck of the cottage and watched the sun set every evening. The beauty of the sky held me in awe from the beginning of the sunset until dark.

I watched and photographed from the same vantage point each night. It was never boring!

The Deck Reflects - Weekend Reflections

Click the pic to enlarge

The upper deck at the cottage is a great spot to sit and look out onto the lake. And as you can see in the reflections, a great spot for our small dog to catch 40 winks!

Yep, cleaning the deck glass paid off!

Looking up from the beach. A beautiful day in late September.

Doll's Eyes

For Macro Monday/Ruby Tuesday

Click the pic to enlarge
Beneath the early autumn canopy of turning trees, the doll's eye plant stands out on the forest floor, with striking white berries, each centred with a black dot, on a thick, deep red stalk. Named for the resemblance to the eyes of old fashioned porcelin dolls, this plant is pure poison. Also known as baneberry, all parts of this plant can cause ill effects in humans if ingested. This is one plant that does not follow the old folk adage that any berries eaten by birds are okay for humans. Ruffled grouse, robins, wood thrushes and other songbirds eat these berries with no consequences.

Haliburton High - Outdoor/Watery Wednesday

A lake is the landscape's most beautiful and expressive feature.  It is earth's eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature.

Wolves - Our World Tuesday/Outdoor Wednesday

We spend our summer vacation time up in the Haliburton Highlands in Ontario. It's a beautiful thickly forested area in the province that has over 600 lakes and heaps of wildlife roaming around.

It's not unusual to see bears, moose, beavers, woverines, deer etc. Sometimes the sightings are a little too close for comfort...like when a woverine shows up on your cottage property, or you barely miss hitting a black bear as it lumbers across the road a few feet from your car.

One of the most elusive creatures in the Canadian bush is the wolf (grey timber wolf). They are often heard howling at night, but rarely seen.

Luckily for us, the Haliburton Forest and Wildlife Reserve's Wolf Centre, is just up the road from the cottage. I love spending an afternoon there, watching and photographing these beautiful creatures.

"We have doomed the Wolf not for what it is, but for what we have deliberately and mistakenly perceived it to be..the mythologized epitome of a savage, ruthless killer..which is, in reality no more than a reflected image of ourself."

The Alien Has Landed

Another example of the weird and wonderful fungi found in the forests up at the cottage, in the Haliburton Highlands of Ontario.
Click the pic to enlarge

This is a Rosy Russula, most often found in mixed wood forests of Red Maple, Balsm Fir, and spruce trees. This mushroom is a favorite food for Red squirrels. They carry them up trees, and hang them from branch forks, or stuff them in cracks in the bark. There, the mushrooms will dry out, and be preserved for eating later in the winter.
