Note Card Party - May 2013

I rarely edit my photos, some cropping and sharpening is usually all I do. I recently started dabbling with some of the many editing buttons in photo editors, and found it's a lot of fun. Although I am truly a purist when it comes to my photos, I like some of the effects.
I found a great meme - VEE'S NOTE CARD PARTY

You search for four photographs from your own blog that would make a nice set of note cards, and post them on your blog once a month. I thought it would be a fun place to share my altered photos.

Not Such A Warm Welcome

This little guy just got in from Columbia, South America where they winter.
They come up to to breed here in North America in spring and summer.
Hmmm, maybe I flew a bit far too north thinks this Rose-breasted Grosbeak.
Yep, that's snow you see. Yesterday May 12th, it snowed off and on all day in my part of SW Ontario.

The Rose-breasted Grosbeak is a large stocky insect-eating songbird in the cardinal family. It is primarily a foliage gleaner. It breeds in cool-temperate North America, migrating to tropical Central and South America in winter.

They also eat sunflower seeds, safflower seeds and raw peanuts, which is a good thing, because there were no insects around in the snowstorm!

This is a "first" for me, I've never seen Grosbeaks before. I spent a lot of the day watching TWO of them pigging out at the feeders! I also saw one female, but she never stood still enough for me to get a shot.

Look Wayyyyyyyyyyy Up!

The pet (Merfy)

 The critter (Stoney Braveheart)

Obviously the photos were taken at different times, (otherwise the pet may have chased away caught and killed the critter...in his dreams anyway), but I love the similarity of stance here!

What they are looking at...
The pet, of course barked until it flew away, the critter still can't figure out why he can't climb the baffled pole to reach the food.

Does It Moo?

My granddaughter loves to birdwatch in my yard with me. When I spotted this guy, I was really excited. I told her that it's a Cowbird, not one that I normally see in the yard. She said "Why are you so excited gramma, does it MOO?"

Brown-headed Cowbird (Male)

The Brown-headed Cowbird is a stocky blackbird with a fascinating approach to raising its young. Females forgo building nests and instead put all their energy into producing eggs, sometimes more than three dozen a summer. Then they lay in the nests of other birds, abandoning their young to foster parents.  Many people consider them a nuisance bird, since they often destroy the eggs and young of smaller songbirds.

Maple Blooms

It's Spring in my world!

Last week there were only a few buds on the trees and bushes. This weekend it all started to happen!

One of my favourite things to photograph in the spring is my Maple tree in bloom.

Surrealscape

Our granddaughter running along the shore of Lake Huron at sunset.

It was our first trip to the lake this season. I was really hoping for a spectacular sunset, you know - with the sun being a fiery ball of red, with clouds in shades of crimson and hot pink!

I was a bit disappointed when I saw that big white sun, no clouds and a calm lake, as the sun began to set.

As we sat watching Beep running along the shore, that big glowing white ball, and mirror calm lake was producing some pretty darn amazing effects...surreal.

I hauled out my camera and started snapping pics. I didn't have very high hopes about the outcome of the captures, but clicked away until the sun disappeared on the horizon.

When we got home, I loaded the photos onto the putter, and was quite pleased with the results. I must say, I love my Canon T2i, the photos are so true to the real thing!! This photo is not edited other than cropping and resizing.
