Teeny Baby Mouse

Macro Monday/My World Tuesday/Camera Critters
Hubber's found this little sweetie in the grass before he set about mowing the lawn. Not including tail length, this baby deer mouse is just over 1-1/2 inch long.

Newly out of the nest, he is not yet fearful of humans, so I picked him up and put him in a container, until the lawn had been mown.

When it was safe, I let him go, back near where he was found.

The deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus), is grayish to light brown on top, with a white belly. It has large ears and a furry tail and has eyes that appear to “bug out.” The deer mouse is named for its colouration, which may resemble that of a white-tailed deer. The typical city-dwelling house mouse, is usually entirely grey or light brown (no white on the belly).

    Good shots, Karen. And it is cute, but I hate mice, even deer mice. They invade my home and ruin food and clothing. Not a welcome visitor, at all!

    Nice shots, Karen. We have little snakes in our pool about once a week. Hubby always scoops them out and let's them go in the alleyway. Except for a really big one (4-foot) in the flower bed a few weeks ago. And we live in the city.

    The only things I am really afraid of are mice and rats. As in cannot go near one, even if utterly dead.

    But I have never seen a deer mouse before and have to admit they look quite sweet and your photos, especially that first one, are wonderful!

    Karen that little mouse is adorable!!
    Now it might be another case if I saw it scampering across the kitchen floor .. you would hear me screaming for sure girl ;-) but how silly is that? we are so much bigger yet the sight of a mouse scurrying sets my heart thumping. Yet son had hamsters when he was young and that didn't bother me .. I must be a bit mental?LOL .. in any case you got beautiful shots of this little sweetie !
    Joy .. I haven't looked in the bag yet ! haha

    Oh, he is so adorable and I'm so glad you able to protect him until the mowing was done! Such delightful photos, Karen! I love them! I know you're not supposed to love mice, but I live on the fifth floor of a seven story apartment building and we're not bothered by mice. Hope you have a great week -- and the little guy, too!!

    Definitely a sweet-looking little creature, but as soon as I read "deer mouse" I was reminded of a big scare in British Columbia in the 90s. I don't know what the status of the situation is now, but this is what was going on then, as reported in 2006:

    Babies always make us feel tender with their loveliness and potentials for future. I'm a bit sad some of them could be laboratory mouse though some of them also could be nuisance to humans. Thank you, Karen, for sharing this tiny adorable mouse.

    While I certainly do NOT want a mouse in the house... this little guy is absolutely adorable. (maybe this species does not come in the house at all) Your photos of him are marvelous!

    Karen, what a sweetie. The smallest mouse, and a marsupial at that, that I have ever seen was an Australian hopping mouse on our verandah at our mountain home.

    Great photos and a sweet rescue story as well.
