My granddaughter (Beep) helped make some bird feeder rolls the other day.
(Edit: Since many asked, we use a mixture of peanut butter and oatmeal, 4-1 ratio, smear it thickly over the tube, then roll it in seeds. The oatmeal makes the pb less sticky so it won't gum up the bird's beaks. That's not a problem in freezing temperatures though)
This little guy loves them!
Carolina Wren
The Downy tried one too!
We put one out in the cedar tree where there would be more shelter for the birds,
or ummmmm....
Bandit (Black Squirrel)
and Patches (Grey Squirrel)

What a delightful post for the day, Karen, as always!! Your granddaughter is adorable!! And your birds and squirrels always start my day with a grin and a giggle!! Today is certainly no exception!! Hope your week is off to a good start!!
ReplyDeleteOh now I could use an excellent helper like your Granddaughter and boy oh boy your photos make me smile and must admit a little giggle like Sylvia above..Hope your feeling better. Hug B
ReplyDeleteOh Beep is such a big help to you and obviously a nature lover just like her Grandmother. The birds (and squirrels) are great pictures and I'm fascinated with the way you made the feeder roll. (Don't laugh, they say there are no dumb questions, but what makes the seeds stick on? Suet?)
ReplyDeleteNice bird and squirrel shots. And what a great idea for a simple bird feeder! Love your grandaughter's name (or is it a nickname?)
ReplyDeleteThe birds and squirrels appear to be very thankful. ;)
ReplyDeletei love the black squirrel - we don't see those in VA. i have seen the bird treat some where ... looks like a great idea. yummy good for all the birdies. ( :
ReplyDeletebest tree restaurant EVER!!! :)
ReplyDeletePretty good bird feeder.
ReplyDeleteI just love how you got your granddaughter involved! Great show of the birds and squirrels.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Beep enjoyed her work! beautiful photos!
ReplyDeleteVery neat !! Now i know what I can happily use those empty rolls for ;)) Matter of fact I am going to make one right now !
ReplyDeleteWhat a novel way to feed the birds. Your granddaughter is precious and very helpful. :)
ReplyDeleteWonderful shots of your beautiful grandchild and also of the birds. Great that she's learning to prepare food for them.
ReplyDeleteThat's smart!
ReplyDeleteGreat photos!
What a wonderful idea! We made some pinecone feeders but as there is nowhere for the birds to light they do not eat the seed. I will be making your roll feeders for them!
ReplyDeleteTotally stunning!!! Lovely wee grandie. Do you have a recipe? plan for the feeders,? I have a friend, I'm sure she , and I, would like to make some. Greetings to all at your place, Jean.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea..... how do you make it all stick?

ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. Thanks for the tip! Great shots!
ReplyDeleteYour birds are very fortunate that you provide such a feast! Looks like you had a good helper.
ReplyDeleteSuch beautiful images, up close and personal. I worked for over an hour this morning to finally get a fleeting glimpse of a Carolina Wren that was singing loudly right in front of me!
ReplyDeleteThe wren is so adorable! They all seem to enjoy your rolls.
ReplyDeleteI love the tube!
ReplyDeleteI might have to try the rolls. My problem is trying to prevent the squirrels from devouring everything the moment we put it out.
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful shots. Love the idea of the tube. Can’t wait for Buddy to get home and give it a try. Such a great idea. All the birds seem very happy with your creation. genie
ReplyDelete...very innovative; I like that. I couldn't use peanut butter mix here, it would just melt off in the first ten minutes out there :) Nice that your grand-daughter is at an age when you can encourage her to make for the birdlife, and the squirrels etc., young kids will soak it all up so well and hopefully hold onto those wonderful memories and carry them on too
ReplyDeleteMaybe your granddaughter will be a future birder. The rolls of seeds is a great idea. It seems like the birds are loving them too.
ReplyDeleteGreat shots, thanks for sharing. Have a happy week!
your gd is sooooo cute!! i made these once and my squirrels devoured them!!
ReplyDeletereally beautiful images today karen!!
That is a great idea. I'm going to make some as soon as I get home to see what birds are still in the area. - Margy

ReplyDeleteSUCH a treat to see. Thank you so very much.
ReplyDeleteGood use for an old dunny roll. :)
ReplyDeleteWell, these birds and squirrels know where the good stuff is! The rolls are really pretty, and I know the animals appreciate them. So funny to see the squirrels going after it too.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed your post. Great work done by your grand daughter. Bird feeder looks so attractive for the birds to take their food.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. Lovely shots!
