A sun dog is an atmospheric phenomenon that creates bright spots of light in the sky. Sun dogs may appear as a colored patch of light to the left or right of the sun. They are made commonly of plate-shaped hexagonal ice crystals in high and cold cirrus clouds.

  19. This is a very interesting phenomenon! I think I have seen a sundog when I was sitting in a plane. I saw a sunlike lightbulb appearing in the clouds lower than the plane. It couldn't have been the sun and the passenger next to me was also surprised to see it. Thank you for sharing this photo!
