An Emergency Trip To the Vet

Late last night, (or early this morning), we rushed our dog Merfy, to the emergency vet clinic. He was having episodes of standing still with his elbows spread apart, head extended, back hunched, eyes bulging, making loud snorting sounds and gasping, that appeared to indicate breathing difficulties or choking.

To make a long story short, he was having an episode of reverse sneezing. A fairly common, and totally harmless event that often occurs in small dogs.

Merfy relaxing after the traumatic event.

Needless to say, I was up most of the night!

  4. glad merf was fine. :) never knew that was called reverse sneezing. thanks for the education. my dogs will occasionally go thru spasms like that - i call it 'snotty nose', like they have to clear their nasal tracts.

  7. I used to work at an emergency vet and we'd see these little guys all the time. It is scary when they're going through that reverse sneeze thing. I have two chihuahuas at home that still do it. And I hate it. Your little Merfy is precious, and I'm so glad that's all it was.

  9. I'm so glad Merfy is OK, and the vet knew what had happened, I can relate to staying up all night too. when they cannot tell us in words, it is so scary. Take care of Merf and yourself today, sleep for you both might be the answer. Cheers, Jean.

  10. Oh poor baby! Can they do anything to keep it from happening again? Or is it harmless? He looks happy and relaxed and probably got over the whole thing much faster than you did!
