Freckle Berries (Solomon's Seal)

 Solomon's Seal Berries (False)
(Smilacina racemosa)
False Solomon's Seal is a lovely woodland perennial native to North America. Unlike True Solomon's Seal berries, the berries of this plant are not poisonous. In late fall the berries turn brilliant red and are eaten by birds and wildlife.

  2. those berries are lovely and I'm not sure I've ever seen them. when I was in college (many years ago) I took a class on wild foraging and one of the things we were taught it safe to eat was the root of Solomon's Seal. now there may be varieties that are not safe to eat, I don't know. but we had a dinner at the end of class and ate all that we had foraged during the semester and that was one of the roots that stands out in my mind as being delicious. happy day to you Karen.

  16. These look like nature's candy, a berry that looks like a sweet treat - for birds and other critters. I feel that each of these could be individually wrapped and sold as candy. The speckled berry is artistry all by itself...

  42. Hi there - what great looking berries!

My 'flat' wing was not sitting on kangaroo paw - I'm not sure what sort of plant it is, but it used to grow in our garden in Somerset - so I think it would be classed as weed here!
